Monticello is one of my favorite places in America because of both the neoclassical architecture and because of the picturesque setting upon a gorgeous mountain. It is a National Historic Landmark just outside Charlottesville, Virginia, United States. It was the estate of Thomas Jefferson, the principal author of the United States Declaration of Independence, third President of the United States, and founder of the University of Virginia; it is also, at his direction, the site of Jefferson's burial place. I just love the surrounding trees, orchards, flower gardens, lawn and walkways, and the extensive vegetable garden. Of course, it is the person of Thomas Jefferson that I admire as one of the greatest Founding Fathers of our nation. I highly respect his views on liberty, self-government, God-given rights, and binding down the three branches of the federal government with the chains of the U.S. Constitution.

I've been driving past this look out point for over a year waiting for just the right lighting and shadows and smokey fog. I knew that if I were patient, the day would come that I would be able to capture the layered smokey fog of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I took this from the Blue Ridge Parkway looking east into the morning sun towards Wilkes County and the Brushy Mountains.

This is one of my favorite harbors in the whole world - Rockport Harbor, located in Massachusetts. It's situated on Cape Anne, about 20 minutes north of Glouchester. I've heard that the red lobster shack in this photo is the most painted building in America. It's called "Motif No. 1" and artists from all over come to paint it surrounded by this quaint and scenic harbor. The amazing thing to me is that God so blessed me for two years by letting me live about 7 minutes from here. What an adventurous place to live for a photographer and explorer like me who just loves the rocky coastline around Cape Anne.

I've always had a fascination with compasses. I learned how to use them in the boy scouts and when I first learned how to sail and navigate the Maine coast. This photograph speaks to me of keeping my eyes focused on the compass when out sailing, which is another way of saying, "Fixing my eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of my faith..." Jesus guides me in this life by His Spirit that He has put inside of me. I seek not to be led by my own understanding, but rather, to be led by the Spirit of God, for this is how the sons of God are led in this life.

I am a sailor and have always loved sailboats, wind, the ocean, and rope. My father first took me sailing when I was about 6 years old, and I can still remember the thrill of sailing in Quincy Harbor with him. I recently visited Newport Beach, CA, where I used to sail and race about 15 years ago. There's a special feeling every time I walk down onto the docks and see the sailboats and feel the wind blowing through my hair. When I saw this neatly coiled rope on the dock next to a Shields, I just knew I had to capture it with my camera. It speaks to me of having secure mourings in my life to keep me from drifting away from God and family and my purpose. It also speaks to me of the value of organization and neatness, which are so important on board a ship or sailboat, and are equally important in one's life.

Here in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, we had our first ice storm this year. The night before was a long cold night of freezing rain, followed by the build up of ice on everything! Every tree, branch, twig, and blade of grass was covered with ice by morning. Weak trees and limbs were down everywhere. Nevertheless, I took my camera with me and stopped all along the way photographing the beauty of the ice. I came upon this field that was literally covered in ice. This Inspirational photographyimage shows the beauty and wonder of an unborn child being knit together in its mother's womb, hidden and out of sight, silent, unseen, yet very very real. It's amazing to me how God forms a child inside a mother's womb and breathes His "breath of life" into its nostrils, and the child becomes a living spirit, soul, and body. This is a photograph of my son several weeks before he was born. Pregnancy is a beautiful thing to watch throughout the 40 weeks, knowing that God has given you the gift of another human life to love, take care of, steward, and raise to know both his natural father and his spiritual heavenly Father.

I took this "fogscape" up on the top of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, about 15 minutes from Blowing Rock and Boone. It was such a beautiful foggy morning that I just had to grab my camera, get out, walk around, and start shooting in the fog. It was freezing cold, but it was worth it to get so many fog shots.

I recently decided that I need to "master" photographing things in FOG. Let me tell you, shooting in fog is not very easy. The diffused light coming through fog is often much brighter than one realizes. In fact, the light meter in most cameras gets fooled by the fog and tends to adjust in such a way as to make the final exposure much too dark and underexposed. I'm now learning to use the "E.V. Compensation" setting on my camera to open up the exposure to let in more light. Generally, so far, I've found that adjusting one f-stop or 1.3 or 1.6 is about right. I do also use my histogram after the fact to check on the exposure and see if I got it right.

This "fogscape" was taken up on the top of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, about 15 minutes from Blowing Rock and Boone.

As I've mentioned previously, I've always had a love for being in fog in the mountains and by the seashore. When I saw how foggy it was a few weeks ago on my way to work, I decided to drive along the beautiful and densely wooded Blue Ridge Parkway to see what I could find. I came upon this mysterious scene and knew that I had found a real treasure and a new "mysterious mountain friend."

Mysterious Fog - Fine Art Inspirational Nature & Landscape Photography by Josiah Friberg

Fog is not so easy to photograph. The light that comes through fog enters the camera's lens and fools the camera's light meter, making it think that it is too bright. This results in the camera automatically compensating by trying to make everything 18% gray, which means that fog will normally get underexposed and the final result will be an image that is just too dark and not really representative of what the fog actually looked like. In this image, I reworked it in Photoshop to make the white fog look more truly white.

As I've mentioned previously, I've always had a love for being in fog in the mountains and by the seashore. When I saw how foggy it was a few weeks ago on my way to work, I decided to drive along the beautiful and densely wooded Blue Ridge Parkway to see what I could find. I came upon this mysterious scene, grabbed my camera, and started shooting. I hope that you enjoy it and are inspired by it.

During this holiday season, I'd like to wish all Jewish people a Happy Chanukah.

HAPPY CHANUKAH

I just celebrated my first Chanukah with some dear friends here in Moravian Falls, North Carolina. I enjoyed learning the history behind the holiday celebration. Even more so, I enjoyed participating in all of the traditions such as the lighting of the menorah candles, the eating of the latkes (potato pancakes) with apple sauce and sour cream, the eating of the Challah bread and drinking of the wine, praying and thanking God for His goodness, singing together as a group, and worshiping the LORD God with other believers.

Chanukah celebrates the day the temple was rededicated to God and the miracle of the oil that God made to last for eight days. The miracles, of course, are the small jar of oil that burned for so long and the small group of Maccabees who fought a mighty king and won. Ever since that first Chanukah, Jews just like the Maccabees have fought for the right to pray to God and live as Jews.

Once again, HAPPY CHANUKAH to all the children of Abraham and Israel.

HAPPY CHANUKAH

For those of you who may not know, Chanukah celebrates the miracle God did when He caused a one day supply of holy oil in the temple to last for eight consecutive days. The name "Chanukah" or "Hanukkah" means "dedication." It was during the time of Judah and his father Mattathias that the holy temple had been desecrated, and the Jews were able to reclaim their temple and rededicate it to God as the "house of God" on earth. In summary, Chanukah celebrates the day the temple was rededicated to God and the miracle of the oil that God did during those eight days. The miracles, of course, are the small jar of oil that burned for so long and the small group of Maccabees who fought a mighty king and won. Ever since that first Chanukah, Jews just like the Maccabees have fought for the right to pray to God and live as Jews.

I must tell you that all my life I've been fascinated by clouds, dramatic cloud formations, stormy clouds and skies, and of course, the beauty and colors of sunrises and sunsets. I took this cloudscape a few days ago on my way home from work. I was racing against time to get off the highway to a place where I could see a wide view of the sky and clouds. This is one of my favorite quaint New England harbors where you can find all kinds of boats and gift shops. Rockport is actually a haven for artists, so you can find wonderful paintings and photographs for sale. This photograph focuses on two classy traditional lobster boats moored in the midst of other more modern boats. It is a crowded harbor, so it's hard to photograph one or two boats all by themselves. About a year ago I had a professional photographer friend over for dinner. That night I showed him some of my photographs and asked him for his input. What he shared with me that night ended up taking my inspirational photography and fine art landscapes to a whole new level, and I would now like to share that wisdom with you.

Key #1 – Learn how to properly and creatively “crop” your photographs.

For decades, the standard photograph sizes have been 3 x 5, 4 x 6, 5 x 7, 8 x 10, 11 x 14, 16 x 20, etc. In the old days, you would take your negatives to a shop and choose which sizes you wanted. You had the choice of various sizes, but you never really had the choice to change the dimensions and proportions of the sizes. In other words, if you had a nice wide landscape, you couldn’t crop out some of the top and bottom and get a print with an unconventional size such as 14 x 5. The point here is this: those old traditional sizes and proportions have been limiting your creativity of expression as an artist.

It’s time for you to start cropping your photographs differently and in such a way as to maximize your creative expression of the scenes in your photographs. For example, when my friend looked at one of my photos of a beautiful harbor in Maine, he suggested that I crop out a lot of the somewhat boring sky, as well as some of the uninteresting foreground. He taught me that these areas are often wasted space because they contain elements that are uninteresting and that do not add to the overall composition of the photograph. He was right!

That very night after my friend left, I jumped on my laptop and started immediately re-cropping a lot of my nature landscapes. I couldn’t believe what a shocking difference it made. What had been a good photograph suddenly became a great photograph because the dynamics of the composition had changed to be more artistic and creative. Now, a year later, I automatically crop all of my photographs in this more free and creative way, and I have never looked back at the traditional dimensions and proportions.

One challenge I have had to learn to overcome has to do with framing my newly cropped photographs. As you can imagine, the standard pre-made frames do not match the dimensions of my creative photographs. I have found two solutions to this problem. The first solution is to simply have custom mats and frames made to match the dimensions of my creatively cropped photographs. This is quite a bit more expensive than using the old standard sized pre-made frames, but it is worth it when you’ve got a great photograph. The second solution is to create an electronic mat in Adobe Photoshop that fits the standard dimensions. In other words, if your image is 12 x 6, then you can create a 14 x 11 mat by adding one inch to the top and bottom and 2.5 inches to the left and right sides.

I encourage you to start cropping your photographs from now on from an artistic creative perspective rather than staying confined to the limitations of the traditional dimensions. Start applying this professional photographer's insider secret to your photography.

I also love the way the clouds were just hanging over the mountains of Moravian Falls in the background. The longer I look at this fine art photograph, the more I see in it. It is, of course, a very symbolic image that speaks about many spiritual things related to water. In this case, it makes me thirst for the water that Jesus spoke of that springs up to eternal life from within. This refers to the Holy Spirit who was later poured out on Jesus' followers, and is God's gift to everyone who believes in His Son.

This inspirational photography fine art image was taken at a local strawberry farm here in the North Carolina landscape. I took my family out for a morning of fun picking strawberries. With buckets in hand, my wife, two small children, and myself went strawberry pickin' and had a blast! We learned how to only pick the large, ripe deep red ones because they are the ones that have the sweetest and richest flavor. The strawberry season is quite short, so make sure you plan ahead and get out there in time before they're all gone. This landscape view of the autumn hills behind my land reminds me of a prophetic word I received when I first moved to Moravian Falls from California. A complete stranger came up to me during the worship service and said, "The hills are alive with the sound of music, and you are one of the notes!" Now, when I look at this Christian inspirational photography image, I think of those prophetic words that encouraged my soul. I realize that God has brought me here for a purpose, and that I have a note to sing in His glorious song. And the land that we bought will be a part of that song. Some day soon, when the timing is right and God gives us the green light, my wife and I plan to build our home on this land. We will have a 360 degree view of the surrounding mountains and hills, including this view and a view of Pores Knob and the Yadkin Valley. A few months ago I took my family for a drive up on the Blue Ridge Parkway here in western North Carolina. We stopped and had a picnic and then went exploring. We found this old pioneer-style fence, which had some classic features to it and looked so beautiful in the landscape. When I look at this inspirational photography image, it reminds me of the pioneer spirit that Daniel Boone and other adventurous Americans had when they went westward exploring new territories. In fact, this fence is located in the general area where Daniel Boone lived, and it is only about 10 minutes from the town of Boone named after him. I didn't put a Christian Scripture on this photo, but I hope you are still inspired by looking at this fine art image.

I am a member of a photo club called the Blue Ridge Photographic Society, and every month we have a photo contest. The theme for this month was flowers. I've taken a few good flower shots in the past, but we are currently in a drought here in North Carolina and there aren't many good-looking flowers around in the landscape. The day before the contest, I was at a friend's house and asked if he had any live flowers. This photo is of that sole flower. I stayed up until 1:30 am trying to find a way to make this ordinary looking flower look like a piece of fine art. Eventually, after trying various different techniques, I discovered something in Photoshop CS2. It's a technique by famous nature photographer Vincent Versace that creates drama with a soft spotlight. You'll find it under the Filter menu, under Render, and under Lighting Effects. The style I chose to use was Flashlight. I chose to put a familiar Christian Bible verse by Jesus about considering the lilies of the field that neither toil nor spin. I hope this piece of inspirational photography truly inspires you to appreciate the beauty of God's creation and trust Him to take care of all of your needs (without worrying). This inspirational photography image was taken in my neighbor's yard in Millers Creek, NC. I like it because it reminds me to take time away from the busy week to rest and spend some quality time alone with God. As a Christian, I believe in setting aside the Sabbath as a special God-ordained day to cease from all my work in order to focus on God and spend time enjoying Him. To me, the Sabbath is a day to rest in God's goodness, enjoy His presence, and spend quality time with my family and friends as well. This landscape image speaks volumes to me about remembering the Sabbath by keeping it holy. I don't see it as some religious legalistic rule, but rather it has become for me the favorite day of the week because I get to relax, pull away from work, focus on God, enjoy my family, and have some great fellowship with my friends. WINNING PHOTO FOR JULY 2007: Every month our Blue Ridge Photographic Society has a photography contest around a different theme. This July the theme was "Bridges." When all the votes were in, there was actually a tie between Josiah Friberg and Alisha Hauser, for the best bridge photo. For some reason some members thought we needed a tie break, so they voted again and chose this photo, "Bridge to Light," as the tie-breaking winning photograph of the month. By the way, this was photographed in Moravian Falls, just off of Highway 16 South, near the brick Baptist Church. I was fortunate to arrive early one foggy morning with my tripod, and I proceeded to shoot the bridge from every angle. I loved the way the morning light was trying to pierce through the fog in the trees which created a sense of wonder and awe in my heart. Glory to God for creating such a beautiful scene for me to capture!
